Dell will no longer be shipping configurations of two of its Alienware PC models to six states in the United States.

High-powered configurations of Alienware Aurora R12 and Aurora R10 will no longer be purchasable from Hawaii, California, Colorado, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington. Any existing orders will now be canceled and users refunded. This is to follow regulations followed in these states with regards to power consumption at home.

To clarify, not all versions of the Aurora R12 and Aurora R10 are affected – only high-powered ones. That means you will have to opt for the cheaper, less power-hungry models if you really want to have one of the two Alienware PCs.

The Register confirmed with Dell the reason behind this issue. “Yes, this was driven by the California Energy Commission (CEC) Tier 2 implementation that defined a mandatory energy efficiency standard for PCs – including desktops, AIOs, and mobile gaming systems,” a statement from Dell to The Register explains. “This was put into effect on July 1, 2021. Select configurations of the Alienware Aurora R10 and R12 were the only impacted systems across Dell and Alienware.”

That being said, Dell won't be the only company affected by these regulations. Other manufacturers will also have to follow suit to comply with these new standards. Alienware or not, the government is starting to crack down on machines with high power draws. More regulations are coming, with the next wave of bans coming this December.
