The Chicago Bears have managed to make a splash in free agency over the last few years. However, it appears they will be looking to switch up their approach this offseason.

The Bears do not have much room to work with as far as salary cap goes. According to ESPN's John Roberts, they sill likely sit out of this year's sweepstakes:

“The Bears rank near the bottom of the league in cap space but managed to free up almost $6 million by releasing tight end Dion Sims and $3 million by restructuring Kyle Long's contract,” wrote John Roberts. “Still, don't expect the Bears to be all that aggressive in free agency after making their big move in September by trading for and extending Khalil Mack (with $11.3 million counting on the cap for 2019). But the Bears do have more leverage this offseason, thanks to a 12-4 season, making Chicago a much more attractive destination for free agents.”

The prospect of the Bears sitting out of this year's free agency frenzy is certainly not too far-fetched. They have invested heavily in bringing in key players in recent years such as quarterback Mitchell Trubisky and defensive end Khalil Mack. It seems they will now set their sights on continuing to develop their young talent.

Fortunately, Chicago is one of the few teams that does not have any dire needs to fill on their roster. They will be welcoming back nearly all of their starters from this year on both sides of the ball for the 2019 campaign. Any further additions this offseason would simply be a bonus at this point. Perhaps they are hoping their status as an NFC contender will convince a few veterans to sign with them at a bargain price.
