Chicago Bears rookie running back David Montgomery has been opening up a lot of eyes with his play so far during training camp. A video posted by the Bears media team shows Montgomery trucking a few Bears defenders on his way to a nice gain.

One guy who has taken notice of the great play is Bears offensive coordinator Mark Helfrich who has had nothing but praise for the third-round pick.

“When you finish with a forward lean in the four-minute situation and a bunch of o-linemen were finishing over the top of him, I love to see that,” Helfrich said, according to Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic.. “Guys are excited when you break a tackle and finish the drill and end the game, the simulated game that we were trying to make happen there.”

Helfrich has tried to temper expectations for Montgomery but admits it's hard not to get excited about what he can provide for the team.

“Cautiously very, very optimistic. I like him a lot,” Helfrich said of Montgomery. “I like him a lot. Unbelievable guy, great mentality. Is constantly asking questions. If he does something well he wants to make sure he saw it correctly, didn’t just get lucky. He’s a perfectionist, competitor. He’ll run the ball well. I’m very excited about him.

Montgomery had a standout last year as a Junior at Iowa State racking up 1216 yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground. He also did some work catching some passes hauling it in 22 times for 157 yards.

Montgomery will be second or third on the depth chart once the season starts but should get plenty of opportunities to impress.
