On Thursday, it was announced that the Chicago Bears filled their vacancy at head coach. They are reportedly hiring former Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus to become the next Bears head football coach. Eberflus was among a laundry list of great potential candidates, but the fit is certainly interesting. That has left FOX Sports' Colin Cowherd with an interesting take on social media:

Cowherd points out that the Bears have a young quarterback, entering a pivotal season in his career. Yet, the team is hiring a defensive-minded head coach.

Eberflus was the defensive coordinator for the Colts for the last four years. He helped lead the defense to three top-10 finishes in points against. They were one of the best units in football two years ago, but took a slight step back in 2021. However, the Colts' defense was among the league leaders with 33 takeaways.

Chicago drafted Justin Fields with the 11th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. The plan was for him to sit and learn , but after an early injury to Bears quarterback Andy Dalton, Fields was thrust into the starting role for the majority of his rookie season. He appeared mostly overwhelmed, but showed moments of brilliance with his legs and occasionally his arm.

Chicago's defense, despite dealing with a rash of injuries to key players, was still a formidable unit in 2021. It appeared obvious the offense was what needed fixing. That is going to make Eberflus' pick for offensive coordinator crucial to the team's success in 2022.
