Chicago Bears rookie running back David Montgomery impressed a lot of people last night. After six total touches for 46 yards and a score, the third-round pick received praise from one Matt Forte.

Forte was, of course, a longtime Bear, and a good one at that. He played in Chicago for eight years and never had less than 1,000 total yards and always had four or more scores. Praise from Forte himself is great for Montgomery's confidence, and shows just how skilled he is.

The former Iowa State Cyclone is in a three-man race for carries in Matt Nagy's offense. Projected starter Tarik Cohen is more of a scat back, but is definitely capable of handling some carries. Montgomery's biggest competition is new signee Mike Davis. Davis came to Chicago from the Seattle Seahawks, and is known for his physical running style. Montgomery is a better receiver than the former Seahawk, but will still have to fight to earn carries against him.

Head coach Matt Nagy is renowned as an offensive guru, and his three-headed monster at running back will certainly help. The backs are paired with a strong offensive line, but the real burden lies on quarterback Mitchell Trubisky.

Trubisky was picked second overall three years ago, and enters a make-or-break season. The former UNC Tarheels' rookie season was a nightmare, but it was coached by John Fox, so a bit of a pass on that one. Trubisky took strides last year, but 2019 will show if he really has what it takes to unlock the offense.

Hopefully, David Montgomery can help him reach that plateau.
