The Chicago Bears slapped the franchise tag on star wide receiver Allen Robinson earlier this offseason, and the two sides have until July 15 to get a long-term deal done. Otherwise, Robinson plays the 2021 season on the one-year tender.

According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, it sure looks like Robinson will be playing on that one-year deal. There were some discussions right after the 2020 season about a new contract, but there have reportedly been “no substantive talks” since. Pelissero deems it “unlikely” a long-term agreement is reached.

A new contract for Robinson has been a talking point for a while now, but it looks like there's a decent chance he plays on this one-year franchise tag (worth $17.98 million) and then goes elsewhere as a free agent. The 27-year-old wants to get paid like a top receiver after missing out on a massive payday last time around due to a torn ACL.

Even with the Bears' awful quarterback situation in recent years, Robinson has put up big numbers. He caught a career-high 102 passes for 1,250 yards and six touchdowns while playing in all 16 games in 2020. This came after he caught 98 passes for 1,147 yards and seven scores in 16 games in 2019.

Chicago just struck gold in the 2021 NFL Draft by trading up for Justin Fields. While Andy Dalton is the starter for now, it probably won't be too long until we see Fields under center. It would be great to have Robinson as a big target for Fields in the coming years, but that might not be in the cards.
