The Cincinnati Bengals are weaponizing their offense. On Sunday, the team claimed wide receiver/returner Pharoh Cooper and running back Samaje Perine off waivers, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Cooper, waived by the Arizona Cardinals, should immediately slot in as the team's punt returner; it's what he does best. In 2017, with the Los Angeles Rams, he made the first-team All-Pro and Pro Bowl exclusively for his efforts as a return man.

Cooper took a kick to the house in 2017 while averaging a league-leading 27.3 yards per attempt on 34 attempts. He also averaged 12.5 yards per punt return. The next season, he was placed on injured reserve for ankle and lost his job to JoJo Natson. The Rams waived him in December.

The Bengals likely added Cooper strictly for his abilities as a returner. His game outside of special teams isn't ready for many offensive snaps outside of gadget plays. Alex Erickson — who is currently slated as the return man — may bump up to playing exclusively as a receiver.

Perine will find a familiar face in the Bengals locker room. He joins his former Oklahoma Sooners running mate Joe Mixon. The two played together for three years (Mixon spent a year as a redshirt) in Norman and entered the 2017 NFL Draft together.

Mixon saw his name called in the second-round, Perine had to wait until the Washington Redskins took him in the fourth.

Perine had a solid rookie season — running for 603 yards and a score on 3.4 yards per carry — then fell out of the Washington rotation due to injuries and an influx of talent.
