Cincinnati Bengals running back Joe Mixon suffered an ankle injury in the 2019 NFL season opener. It seems his status for Week 2 against the San Francisco 49ers is still up in the air.

Mixon was finally able to practice after missing the first two days earlier this week. According to Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk, he is listed as questionable against the 49ers:

Mixon returned to practice in a limited capacity on Friday and drew a questionable tag on the team’s final injury report of the week.

Mixon's recent setback is hardly ideal for the Bengals. He was primed to resume his role as the workhorse on offense. However, they will now have to take a cautious approach with his recovery seemingly.

Head coach Zac Taylor indicated that they would temper Mixon's workload in practice this week. His ability to log in some time is certainly an encouraging sign regarding his status for Week 2. Regardless, it seems they will take as long as they need to come to a final decision.

Mixon registered just 17 yards on eight touches before exiting the game with an injury in Week 1. It is safe to say that it was hardly an ideal start for last year's AFC rushing leader. He is likely hoping to bounce back against a 49ers defense that gave up 121 rushing yards to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the season opener.

If Mixon is unable to play, running back Giovani Bernard will be slated to handle the bulk of the snaps against San Francisco. Bernard tallied 63 yards on nine touches against the Seattle Seahawks.
