The Cincinnati Bengals have experienced a bit of a rough patch in recent times. After making the playoffs six out of seven years under head coach Marvin Lewis, including three division titles, the Bengals have now missed out on the postseason in back-to-back seasons.

However, Lewis doesn’t only believe the Bengals can make it back to the playoffs this season, he thinks they have the ability to win it all.

“You coach in the National Football League to become world champions and with this team we have the ability to do that,” Lewis said, via the team’s website.

Lewis knows people may scoff at his evaluation of his team, but he points to the likes of the Philadelphia Eagles, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Buffalo Bills as teams that had similarly low expectations last season, only to exceed them and make the postseason.

Still, the odds will be against Lewis and the Bengals to become true title contenders. Even at their very best during their playoff streak, they weren’t even able to make it out of the Wild Card Round. The Bengals are a putrid 0-7 in the postseason under Lewis. That inability to break through in the playoffs was a big reason why Lewis was seemingly on his way out in 2016, only to return.

As unpredictable as the NFL has proven to be from year to year, nothing can completely be ruled out. But even the most optimistic Bengals fan will likely be surprised if the team comes anywhere close to being the contenders Lewis has pegged them to be this year.
