The Buffalo Bills were driving down the field with a chance to tie or win against the Tennessee Titans in the final moments of Monday Night Football. After Josh Allen came up just short on a scramble on third down, Bills head coach Sean McDermott was faced with a game-deciding choice on fourth-and-1 from the 3-yard line: kick a chip-shot field goal to tie the game at 34-34 or go for it and try to win the game in regulation.

McDermott decided to go for it, but Allen was stuffed on a quarterback sneak attempt. The Bills star quarterback slipped as he tried to lunge forward, with Titans defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons making a big play to help disrupt everything. The stop gave Derrick Henry and the Titans a 34-31 victory and left some second-guessing the decision to go for it.

In the case of Allen, he was appreciative that McDermott was aggressive and showed faith in him to go win the game for Buffalo. Via PFT's Curtis Crabtree:

“I take a lot of pride in it and I love coach McDermott for giving me that opportunity and I have to go out there and prove him right. Sometimes the plays don’t go your way,” Allen told reporters after the game.

The Bills coach gave his own explanation for the decision, via PFT's Michael David Smith:

“We’re this far from winning the game,” McDermott said, holding his hands inches apart. “I owe it to my players. I believe in my players. I believe in my quarterback. I trust my guys. Obviously we didn’t get it done in this case, but I trust my players.”

It's hard to fault McDermott too much here. Allen and the Bills probably convert that play more often than not, but it just so happened to backfire in this situation, thanks to a bit of unluckiness with the quarterback slipping. Buffalo is one of the best teams in the NFL and should be making aggressive decisions like that on the regular. It didn't work this time, but there will be other times where that kind of aggressive will be beneficial.
