After the release of WandaVision earlier this year and with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier currently streaming on Disney+, Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is in full swing. However, after two television series, Marvel is yet to release a film since 2019’s Spider-man: Far From Home, which was still part of its Phase Three of releases. Still, we're here, with a Black Widow release date. Moreover, a Black Widow trailer that'll get any Marvel fan all hot and bothered.

But that drought of MCU films is soon to end after it was announced that Black Widow will be released later this year after its previous release dates were delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. What makes the release of Black Widow interesting is that it is scheduled to be released in cinemas and will be made available on the Disney+ streaming service at the same time on July 9.

Black Widow Release Date: July 9, 2021

Black Widow sees Scarlett Johansson return to play Natasha Romanoff and the titular Marvel Comics superhero character that she first played back in 2010’s Iron Man 2. She last played the character in Avengers: Endgame in 2019, although the film is reportedly set after the events of Captain America: Civil War, which was released in 2016. According to the film’s synopsis, Black Widow will deal with Romanoff’s past and her history as a spy long before she became an Avenger.

Aside from Johansson, other members of the film’s cast include Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Rachel Weisz, William Hurt, Ray Winstone, and O-T Fagbenle, with Robert Downey Jr. reportedly also set to reprise his role as Tony Stark / Iron Man.

Disney’s announcement of a July 9 release for the film means that its original release date was delayed by another two months. The film was originally set to be released in May 2020, but was delayed to November 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic as Marvel shifted the release dates of their entire list of Phase Four films. Black Widow was then given a May 2021 release date, which was finally changed to July, with the option of watching it on the Disney+ streaming service also included.

Aside from Black Widow, other films that the company delayed to be released include “Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” which will now be released in September. While coronavirus pandemic has changed the schedule of the MCU films, the release of Black Widow and its performance in the box office should pave the way for the release of other films following the success of their television series in WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

While WandaVision, with its tribute to classic sitcoms, was an unconventional product by the MCU’s standards, Black Widow will likely look similar to The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which also focuses on two of its heroes without superpowers in Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes, unlike Wanda Maximoff and Vision.

However, since the film was set after the events of Captain America: Civil War, it will not focus on the aftermath of The Blip, which a lot of the MCU’s post-Avengers: Endgame releases addressed. Once Black Widow hits theaters and the Disney+ streaming service, it should kick start the next group of releases as the MCU goes back to the big screen after achieving success on the small screen earlier this year.
