Denver Broncos receiver Courtland Sutton caught two red-zone passes last season. Both went for touchdowns.

Checking in at 6-foot-4 and 216 pounds, Sutton is the biggest receiver on the Broncos' roster and, one would think, the most likely target in that area of the field.

But last year, 176 NFL players had more than Sutton’s two red zone catches and 80 receivers had more than his eight targets. Sutton wants those statistics to change this year.

“I’m definitely looking forward to capitalizing on (using my size) more this year,” Sutton said.

Sutton’s two red zone catches were an eight-yard touchdown at the New York Jets and a 27-yard touchdown at Arizona that was thrown by receiver Emmanuel Sanders.

Sutton was a rookie adapting to the pro game last season. Additionally, developing the chemistry and trust with a quarterback to throw your way when the field condenses near the end zone can take some time. But as he gets sets to enter year two, Sutton believes it’s time to show what he can do.

Now its up to new offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello to see the same potential in the second-year receiver as Sutton sees in himself. Rookie tight end Noah Fant will also be competing for those coveted targets, and running back Devonte Booker and Sanders each had as team-high six red-zone catches last year.

It'll be a competitive job, but the Broncos' offense also expects an uptick in passing production with Joe Flacco replacing Case Keenum at quarterback.

“Personally in the red zone, I think I’m one of the biggest threats that (defensive backs) go against,” Sutton said.
