The Denver Broncos fired head coach Vic Fangio on Sunday morning after their 2021 season came to an end with a loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday. NFL Media and ESPN first reported the news, with the Broncos officially confirming it shortly after.

First-year general manager George Paton put out this statement on the decision:

The Broncos went 7-10 this season to finish last in the AFC West. Fangio spent three seasons in Denver, going 19-30 and failing to reach the playoffs all three seasons.

While the Broncos have had a talented roster in recent years, the quarterback situation was a mess for Fangio. Joe Flacco was the starting quarterback in Fangio's first season, but he was mediocre at best and wound up giving way to rookie Drew Lock because of a neck injury. Lock showed promise as a rookie, only to fail miserably in Year 2. Teddy Bridgewater was solid in 2021, but an injury ended his season early, with Lock failing to lead Denver to any victories down the stretch. The Broncos lost four games in a row to close out the campaign.

Paton will now have full authority to go find the next head coach. It will also be up to Paton to find that quarterback who can return this team to glory. Denver has been looking for the next franchise quarterback since Peyton Manning retired.

As for Fangio, he'll likely be in demand as a defensive coordinator and shouldn't be out of a job for too long.
