After moving Von Miller to the Los Angeles Rams at the trade deadline for a second and third round pick in 2022, the Broncos have now added a linebacker. Avery Williamson joined the team on Tuesday and is signed for the rest of the season, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. He will be tasked with manning the linebacking corps in Denver along with another recent pickup, linebacker Kenny Young. Young was actually brought over from the same Rams team that Denver traded Miller to.

So, why trade away one linebacker to get two taht are both probably worse? Because they are playing a different role as a linebacker than Miller did. The Broncos are having success off of the edges (what Miller does best along with run support), but they are struggling with their inside linebackers in coverage. They sacreficed a little bit of that pass-rush so that they could get in position to get Young…and now Williamson. While neither player is going to be confused with the best coverage linebacker in the league, they are certainly better than Alexander Johnson and the other backers that have rotated in and out of the Broncos' starting lineup and the IR.

The changes made to Denver's defense have led the team to a 2-0 record since Young arrived, and the team is surely hoping that Williamson will have the same type of impact. Before this season, where he has bounced around a bit, the 29-year-old Williamson missed only two games in the first seven years of his career in which he has ammassed four interceptions, seventeen pass-breakups and five forced fumbles.
