Heading into the offseason, the Denver Broncos will be one of the several teams in free agency vying to land the services of Pro Bowl quarterback Kirk Cousins. They have quickly emerged as the possible frontrunner to make the big splash acquisition in the coming weeks, and if they do, head coach Vance Joseph anticipates big things.

Denver has put together an intriguing roster that has struggled to break through largely in part to their porous play under center over the last couple of seasons. During a recent interview with Mike Klis of KUSA, Joseph made an indirect pitch to Cousins, and possibly any other quarterback, that his team is “really close” to being a Super Bowl contender once again.

“I won’t talk to Kirk because he is under contract,” Joseph said. “We can’t talk to those guys. But speaking to any free agent that can help our football team, this is a good place to play football. We have a great fan base. I think our football team is really close. Like most football teams after you don’t have a year that you want to have, you have to go back and you have to do a self-evaluation. Every team has issues, every team has holes. Our goal this offseason is to fix our holes. Because, I think we’re really close as a football team.”

Joseph's latest comments make it quite clear that the Broncos are significantly interested in making Cousins their next franchise quarterback.

That said, there is much credence to Joseph's statement, as Denver does possess a highly talented roster on both sides of the ball that is headed by one of the best defensive units in the league. The team already has in place a few huge assets on offense with wide receivers Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders, along with running back CJ Anderson.

The front office may have to make some additional moves to free up more salary cap space beyond the $26.8 million they currently possess, but that shouldn't diminish the potential the roster has to quickly turn it around in 2018.

All of this should only further intensify the team's expected pursuit of Cousins, who will be the most sought-out player on the open market. Several other teams, such as the Cleveland Browns, Arizona Cardinals, and New York Jets, are all anticipated to make a run at the 29-year-old.
