Ahead of the Cleveland Browns' first playoff game since 2002, head coach Kevin Stefanski, two other coaches, and two players have tested positive for COVID-19.

According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, Sunday's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers remains on as scheduled, but those who tested positive, including Kevin Stefanski, will not be able to participate.

The Browns released a statement on Tuesday morning announcing the news of the positive tests:

“We were informed this morning that Head Coach Kevin Stefanski, two additional members of the coaching staff and two players have tested positive for COVID-19. Our contingency planning calls for Special Teams Coordinator Mike Priefer to serve as the acting Head Coach.”

The two players who tested positive were not named. The Browns said they would be immediately closing the team facility while contact tracing takes place. The team said it would work with the NFL on any next steps.

Offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt will take over play-calling duties. Mike Garafolo of NFL Network pointed out that Van Pelt called plays in training camp.

In the week ahead of Cleveland's 24-22 win over the Steelers in Week 17, numerous members of the Browns coaching staff had tested positive for the coronavirus, forcing the team to shut down its practice facility. Additionally, cornerbacks Denzel Ward and Kevin Johnson, tight end Harrison Bryant, linebackers Malcolm Smith and B.J. Goodson, and safety Andrew Sendejo tested positive in the days prior to the regular-season finale, per ESPN.

The Browns played without nearly all their wide receivers against the New York Jets in Week 16 due to COVID-19 concerns.

According to Pelissero, the Browns' recent slew of positive tests were not a result of an in-house outbreak.

“The NFL's medical experts believe last week's #BrownsCOVID cases were all from community spread, not a facility outbreak. Genomic sequencing showed three different strains of virus, I'm told. No positive tests Sunday or Monday. But now, 5 positives today and facility is closed,” Pelissero tweeted.

The no. 6 seeded Browns (11-5) and no. 3 seeded Steelers (12-4) are set to kick-off in the primetime slot on Sunday night, 8:15 p.m. ET from Heinz Field.
