Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach and offensive guru Bruce Arians is miffed at the fact offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich did not get a head coaching interview.

Leftwich has long been regarded as Arians' protege, following him from Arizona to Tampa Bay. Arians feels the former NFL signal-caller deserves more credit for the Bucs' success on the offensive side of the football:

“I was very, very pissed that Byron didn’t at least get an interview this year,” Arians said, via Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk. “For the job that he’s done . . . I think I get way too much credit and so does Tom Brady for the job that Byron has done. Hopefully next year people will see that he took Jameis Winston and broke every single record here, scoring and passing, and now Tom has broken both. He’s done a fantastic job, he’s everything supposedly what people are looking for, although this year was kind of a defensive cycle.”

The Buccaneers ranked third in the NFL in scoring and seventh in total yards. This comes just one year after the Bucs ranked third in both categories, with Jameis Winston throwing for over 5,100 yards and 33 touchdowns. Granted, Winston also threw 30 interceptions. But the output clearly spoke to the offense's potential.

Leftwich had been mentioned as a possible candidate for the head coaching job at his alma mater, Marshall University. But the Thundering Herd eventually opted for former Alabama assistant Charles Huff after Leftwich said he was focused on the remainder of the 2020 season.

Perhaps Leftwich will get an opportunity in the near future. He might also be Arians' eventual replacement, though Arians himself said he has no intention of retiring, regardless of the outcome of the Super Bowl.
