The 2017 season proved once again just how important the backup quarterback position truly is. As a result, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers locked up theirs for the foreseeable future.

There had been some speculation regarding the future of Bucs quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick going into the offseason. According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, Fitzpatrick and the Bucs have reportedly agreed to a deal that will be signed before the start of free agency:

The Bucs are expected to bring back QB Ryan Fitzpatrick in a deal that will be done before free agency, sources say.

Fitzpatrick let it be known following the 2017 season that he wanted to remain in Tampa Bay. The new deal will likely be his last before retirement as he enters his 14th season in the league.

The veteran played sparingly in relief of quarterback Jameis Winston, who dealt with a lingering shoulder injury throughout the season. It had gotten so bad at one point that head coach Dirk Koetter sidelined Winston so that he can recover while Fitzpatrick took over under center in Week 10 versus the Miami Dolphins. Needless to say, he did a solid job of filling in as the starter after leading the struggling Bucs to a 2-1 record during that span.

Fitzpatrick has acknowledged that at this point in his career, his best chance at some quality action will likely be in Tampa Bay. Fortunately, he made the most of it last season by throwing for 1,103 yards, seven touchdowns, and three interceptions in six appearances.
