Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray fit the billing as the No. 1 pick in the 2019 NFL during his rookie year. Regardless, it seems head coach Kliff Kingsbury still has high expectations for his franchise quarterback in the 2020 NFL season.

Year 2 has proven to be a big one for young quarterbacks with Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson establishing themselves as the face of the league. Kingsbury said during an appearance on PFT Live that he is hoping to see Murray take the same kind of leap next year:

“I knew that his skill set was through the roof, but he blew me away in different aspects. His leadership qualities, his approach to the game, is such a difficult thing for these guys to be the face of the franchise at 22. I’m hoping that during year two he can take a big leap like Mahomes and Jackson,” Kingsbury said.

Both Mahomes and Jackson took the league by storm during their respective sophomore campaigns, which also happened to double as their first full seasons as starters. It is safe to say that they were more than ready after putting up historic numbers en route to MVP honors.

Murray will certainly have a tall task head of him if he hope to thrust himself into the MVP conversation as soon as next year. Fortunately, there is good reason for Kingsbury to be confident in his development given what he managed to accomplish in the 2019 campaign.

Unlike Mahomes and Jackson he already has a full season of experience heading into his second year. Of course, the onus will ultimately fall on the Cardinals to shore up a stronger supporting cast like the one the Chiefs and Ravens have.
