St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina may only have one year left on his contract, but that doesn't mean he plans on retiring.

According to Derrick Goold of The St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Molina's representatives have informed the Cardinals that the veteran plans on playing beyond 2020, and St. Louis seems to have interest in bringing him back for the long haul.

The 37-year-old is coming off of a 2018 campaign in which he slashed .270/.312/.399 with 10 home runs and 57 RBI over 452 plate appearances.

While Molina's offense may be falling off, his value of course has never been solely tied to his bat, as he has widely been regarded as one of the best defensive backstops in baseball throughout his career and is known as a great clubhouse leader.

Molina is slated to earn $20 million next season.

The Puerto Rican was originally selected by the Cardinals in the fourth round of the 2000 MLB Draft and eventually made his big-league debut in 2004, when he played in 51 games and slashed .267/.329/.356 with a couple of long balls and 15 RBI.

He struggled offensively from 2004 through 2007, but in 2008, he had a breakout year at the plate, slashing .304/.349/.392 with seven dingers and 56 RBI across 485 trips to the dish. He also won his first Gold Glove award that season.

Molina then proceeded to make his first All-Star team in 2009, registering a slash line of .293/.366/.383 with six homers and 54 RBI through 544 plate appearances.

He would go on to make seven straight All-Star appearances through 2015, and from 2008 through 2015, he notched eight consecutive Gold Gloves.

Molina also made All-Star appearances in 2017 and 2018, winning another Gold Glove in the latter campaign.
