The Boston Celtics were playing short-handed in their Game 1 loss to the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference Finals Tuesday. Both center Al Horford and Defensive Player of the Year, Marcus Smart, missed the game. Smart is currently listed as probable for Game 2 with his foot sprain. Horford was initially considered to be a long shot to clear health and safety protocols.

However, the Celtics just provided a surprising update. Horford is going to be available to play Thursday night in Game 2 vs. the Heat.

That would be a big boost to Boston, especially defensively. Robert Williams made his return to action from his knee injury in Game 1. He played very well, but was clearly lacking endurance, as he was only able to play 28 minutes. With Horford available, that should allow Williams to stay fresh throughout the game.

Horford is also one of the best in the league at being able to switch onto forwards and guards for a big man. Despite his advanced age, the Celtics veteran center has had an excellent year on both ends of the court. He finished among the leaders in blocks per game, and added a scoring prowess as well. He dropped a playoff career-high 30 points in the Game 4 win over the Milwaukee Bucks last round.

If both Horford and Smart suit up for Boston, Aaron Nesmith will more than likely drop from the rotation. He was forced into action in Game 1, going scoreless on 0-for-3 shooting.

The Heat are still without point guard Kyle Lowry with a hamstring injury. So, they are not unaffected by injuries either.
