Heading into the second matchup of the 2017-18 NBA season between the Boston Celtics and Cleveland Cavaliers, new details have emerged about the Kyrie Irving trade. While Irving eventually requested a trade, the Cavaliers reportedly initiated discussions. In addition, owner Dan Gilbert was ‘keenly interested' in the Brooklyn Nets' 2018 first round draft pick as LeBron James was unwilling to commit to the team past the season.

Through all the drama, it appears both teams are on a collision course to meet in the Eastern Conference Finals for the second consecutive season. With Irving establishing himself as the leader in Boston, he feels leaving Cleveland was ‘inevitable' according to Jackie MacMullan of ESPN:

“[Leaving] was inevitable,” he says in his first extensive comments since the trade. “I could feel it.”

When asked to elaborate, the 25-year-old was very blunt about the situation:

“They didn't want me there,” he says.

Although many questioned why Irving would leave LeBron James and the Cavaliers after winning one championship in three consecutive NBA Finals appearances, it appears it has worked out for all parties involved. The four-time All-Star is showing he is capable of being the team's first option as the Celtics have the best record in the Eastern Conference.

With a mix of veterans and prospects, Irving and company are primed to not only dethrone his former team this season, but dominate the Eastern Conference for years to come.
