The Los Angeles Chargers got some good news ahead of their biggest game of the regular season.

The Chargers announced on Friday that star safety Derwin James is available to play in Week 17 against the Denver Broncos.

Los Angeles coach Brandon Staley had previously told reporters he was “hopeful” James would be able to go. The 25-year-old was a limited participant in practice this week.

James did not play in Los Angeles' 41-29 loss to the Houston Texans last week. Though on the gameday roster and suited up, he spent the entirety of the Chargers' stunning defeat on the sidelines, not even going through pre-game warmups.

James initially suffered the injury in Los Angeles' win over the Cincinnati Bengals on December 5th. He didn't play the following week, and was merely a part-time player in the Chargers' season-changing loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday night football in Week 15.

First Team All-Pro as a rookie in 2018, injuries marred James' next two seasons in the NFL. He played just five games in 2019 due to a stress fracture in his right foot, then missed the entirety of last season after tearing his meniscus. James enters Week 17 with 103 tackles, two interceptions, two sacks and three forced fumbles this season, re-cementing himself as one of the most impactful secondary defenders in football.

Los Angeles, 8-7, needs a win over the division-rival Broncos to keep pace in the crowded race for an AFC wildcard berth.
