The standstill between the Los Angeles Chargers and Melvin Gordon may be coming to an end soon in the form of a trade. After making their roster cuts on Saturday, Los Angeles has given Gordon permission to seek a trade, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

At the beginning of training camp, the Chargers running back declared that he was going to holdout with the hope that he could land a long-term deal with Los Angeles. Gordon is entering the final year of his rookie contract after the team picked up his fifth-year option last year.

Coming into 2019, Gordon is set to make $5.6 million but the versatile running back wants a deal that pays him within the same range as the top-tier running backs in the NFL. Up to this point, the Chargers haven't budged on their stance of not paying him top dollar.

The Chargers drafted Gordon in 2015 but the Wisconsin product didn't make his presence felt in the offense until 2016. Since then, Gordon has been the team's workhorse running back next to Philip Rivers.

Last season, Gordon missed four games due to an injury that lingered throughout the season. During his absence, Austin Ekeler and Justin Jackson filled in for Gordon with fruitful results.

In the four games that Gordon missed, Los Angeles won all four games and were able to replace his production with multiple bodies. The fifth-year running back hasn't shown any signs of coming back so the only solution could be to trade him.

While Gordon has been away from the team, both Ekeler and Jackson have taken first-team reps.
