Silk will no longer be spinning her web at Amazon, Deadline reported.

During the company’s upfront presentations this week, it announced that it has given the green light to Noir. The project is based on the Marvel comic and Nicolas Cage is attached to star. Noir was supposed to the second project in a group of live-action Spider-Man Universe series for both MGM+ and Prime Video. However, Silk: Spider Society, the first project, wasn’t mentioned.

The series, which has been in development for five years and has been greenlit for two, is no longer moving forward. A THR source said that the decision to do so was made days ago.

Erstwhile Silk: Spider Society showrunner Angela Kang still has an overall deal with the studio where she can work on other projects. Amazon is still committed to working on the Sony Pictures Universe’s 900 Spider-Man & Co. Marvel characters’ live-action series. The rights to the character Silk, which was created by Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos, will go back to Sony Pictures Television. The studio will shop the series to look for other buyers.

What happened to Silk?

It’s unclear on why the project has been shelved, but it could have something to do with Silk’s long and arduous development road.

In 2019, SPT commissioned Lauren Moon to adapt the comic for television. The story follows Korean-American Cindy Moon. She was bitten by the same spider that bit Peter Parker. She escapes imprisonment and looks for her missing family, as she becomes the superhero Silk. One year later, Sony TV started negotiations with Amazon for a package of Marvel series, starting with Silk. IN 2021, Amazon Studios signed a deal with Tom Spezialy to work with moon as Silk’s showrunner.

In 2022, the Spider-Man spinoff series was announced, and Silk was greenlit for MGM+ and Prime Video, this time with Kang as the new writer, EP and showrunner. Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse producing partners Phil Lord and Chris Miller and Spider-Man franchise producer Amy Pascal would serve as executive producers for SPT and Amazon MGM Studios.

After all that, Silk’s went through at least three versions. One of these reportedly involved Kang and her writing team to modify the series so it wouldn’t depend so much on Silk.

Amazon’s management then delayed reopening the writers room for Silk after the WGA strike last year as they were figuring out the script and their nest steps. This delay caused the Guild to reprimand the company. Sources said that Kang’s latest pitch was received well. However, after several discussions on where best to assign resources on expensive genre IP projects, Amazon decided on Noir and Cage and ultimately shelved Silk.

This news strikes a blow to female-led superhero movies, what with the dismal box office performances of Disney’s 2023 feature The Marvels and the most recent Sony Spider-Man spinoff Madame Web. These negative results also carried over to TV with Prime Video canceling season two of its sci-fi series The Peripheral, starring Chloë Grace Moretz. On the other hand, Fallout, was a massive success and has recently been renewed for a second season.
