The Kansas City Chiefs have “optimism” that running back LeSean McCoy will play in Week 3 against the Baltimore Ravens, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. The veteran back tweaked his ankle in Week 2 and is a game-time decision whether he'll start or not. If he does, expect a big role.

If McCoy is out, that will be the second Chiefs back not to play. Starting back Damien Williams was ruled out previously with a knee injury.

McCoy is listed as questionable in the Chiefs' official injury report. His playing status won't be 100% confirmed until 90 minutes before kick-off. ESPN's Adam Teicher notes that if he plays, Kansas City will be cautious with their approach—essentially, the opposite of Rapoport's big role prediction.

“LeSean McCoy appears he will be ready to play but the Chiefs are likely to be cautious about overloading him. McCoy was on the injury report this week with a sprained ankle,” said Teicher.

Since his arrival to Kansas City—after his release by the Buffalo Bills—McCoy has turned into a favorite in Andy Reid's offense. Through the first two weeks of play, the back has turned back the clock to the tune of 21 rushes for 104 yards; his 5.0 rushing yards per attempt is his most since 2016.

Even if McCoy starts, expect rookie Darwin Thompson to receive his fair share of snaps in the Chiefs offense. A dynamic, yet undersized, back with power and explosiveness, the Kansas City offense will find ways to get him into open space to complement McCoy.
