If you ask anyone what team Hall-of-Fame quarterback Joe Montana played for, everyone would answer the San Francisco 49ers. It doesn't even take a dedicated NFL fan to know this. Not many people would remember that Montana spent the last two years of his career with the Kansas City Chiefs, both of which came with Mike McCarthy serving as an offensive quality control coach.

But apparently, McCarthy never forgot it, and unnamed former Green Bay Packers player said that McCarthy bragged about working with Montana during his 12-and-a-half year tenure as Packers head coach.

“He tried to bill himself as this quarterback master,” the player says, according to Tyler Dunne of Bleacher Report. “It was like, ‘Buddy, I just want to let you know, Joe Montana did a lot more before he was in Kansas City.'”

A personnel man also felt that McCarthy's arrogance was his biggest downfall in Green Bay, saying that McCarthy felt he was much better than he really was.

“That was McCarthy's big mistake,” said the personnel man. “He wanted to be The Guy. He wanted to be The Reason. And he wasn't that good.”

McCarthy took over as Packers head coach in 2006, and from 2009 through 2016, he led Green Bay to eight straight playoff appearances and five NFC North division titles, with his high point coming during the 2010-11 campaign when he led the Packers to a Super Bowl championship.

However, the last two years, McCarthy went 11-16-1 before being fired following a dreadful loss to the Arizona Cardinals this past December.
