The defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs are sure to have a huge target on their chests during the upcoming 2020 NFL season, and additional fuel for opponents will be star quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

The already one-time league MVP Mahomes, 24, is the favorite to win another MVP award in 2020, according to Caesars Sportsbook, per ESPN's David Purdum, at 4-1. Last season's MVP, signal-caller Lamar Jackson of the AFC No. 1 seed Baltimore Ravens, is right behind the also Super Bowl LIV MVP Mahomes at 13-2.

Other notable players to win the MVP are Dallas Cowboys gunslinger Dak Prescott, who was second in the league in passing yards last season, Seattle Seahawks star tosser Russell Wilson, and the only non-quarterback high up on the list, Carolina Panthers star running back Christian McCaffrey.

Per Purdum:

“This is a very, very hard award for someone who doesn't play quarterback or running back to win,” said Jeff Davis, director of risk for Caesars Sportsbook. “If a receiver has a big year, it's generally given to the quarterback. Given the way the league has turned to a passing, quarterback-centric league, for a running back to win, it would take a Herculean effort.”

The elite quarterbacks making up the class of top MVP bets — with Mahomes of the Chiefs again driving the debate — in part explains how driven team success in the NFL is by the level of success by the QB position. 13 quarterbacks were selected last month in the 2020 NFL Draft, including four in the first round and another four in the seventh and final round.
