During Sunday's game against the New York Jets, Kansas City Chiefs star cornerback Marcus Peters was at the center of a controversial play. He threw a penalty flag into the stands after he mistakenly thought it was against him, leading to an additional unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

Although it did not lead to a suspension from the NFL, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid announced on Wednesday that the Chiefs have handed Peters a one-game ban, according to Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk.

Reid revealed the result of that evaluation on Wednesday. Reid announced that Peters has been suspended for this Sunday’s game against the Raiders.

This comes after Reid previously stated that he was going to evaluate the situation in greater detail before coming to a decision on a team-issued punishment. The Chiefs determined Peters took some questionable actions in an unprofessional manner.

The loss of Peters is huge, especially with a critical divisional matchup against the Raiders this week, as first place in the AFC West hangs in the balance. However, the Chiefs felt it was the right choice to make given how things festered on that play.

Kansas City will likely turn to recently acquired Darrelle Revis to play in an extended role against Oakland. Additionally, the team could turn to Steven Nelson, Terrence Mitchell, Philip Gaines, and Kenneth Acker to help fill the massive void in the secondary on Sunday afternoon.
