The Indianapolis Colts made it clear with their signing of Philip Rivers that they want to win now. However, they haven't completely shut the door on Jacoby Brissett still playing for the team in 2020.

In fact, they revealed that they are open to keeping him in the team.

According to Stephen Holder of The Athletic, the line of thinking at the Colts camp seems to point at keeping Brissett as a backup QB for Rivers. It seems that the 27-year-old did just enough through the 2019 campaign to warrant a spot in Indy's spot despite the huge wage bill he will be owed this coming season.

Given this reality, what happens with Brissett? Team sources have indicated the Colts are not opposed to keeping Brissett on the roster. It almost appears to be their intent at the moment.

Jacoby Brissett is owed $21, 375,000 in the final year of his contract with the Colts. Indy can definitely save more than a pretty penny if they choose to trade him, and there should be a number of teams interested in the third-round selection from the 2016 Draft. His 2,942 passing yards and 18 touchdowns make him an attractive option for teams that still don't have their quarterback situation sorted.

However, he could also serve as a capable backup. The fact that the Colts don't mind keeping Brissett alongside Rivers is a testament to the team's uncertainty with the former LA Chargers pass-caller. The quality of his play during his final year in Los Angeles raised questions as to whether he still has it or not.

It also puts the team in a perfect situation QB-wise. If neither Rivers or Brissett fits their long-term plans, they can tank for the remainder of the season and target Clemson's Trevor Lawrence as their QB of the future.

Fans will be in for an unpredictable season, but they're set up for success regardless of the result of their gambit.
