New Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Allen Hurns won’t be wearing his usual No. 88 on his new team; that’s currently being worn by Dez Bryant, who’s still in Dallas despite continued uncertainty about his future. Meanwhile, Cowboys VP Stephen Jones has come out and said that despite some speculation, Hurns wasn’t signed in order to replace Bryant on the team.

No one can be entirely sure whether Jones is actually telling the truth with that statement. But given that the Cowboys have resisted the urge to cut Bryant, it seems as though they still intend to move forward with their Pro Bowl-caliber receiver next season even though his production has not been at its best for the last three years.

Although, that could still depend on whether Bryant will accept a restructuring of his contract. If he doesn’t, maybe the Cowboys do consider cutting him before the start of the season and Hurns suddenly needs to take up Bryant's spot after all.

Hurns is similar to Bryant in that he’s failed to reproduce his impressive past performances over the last couple of years. After bursting onto the scene and putting up 115 catches for 1,708 yards and 16 touchdowns in his first two years in the league with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Hurns has totaled just 74 catches for 961 yards and five touchdowns in the last two seasons.

It’s hard to count on Hurns being the team’s top receiver given his struggles in the past couple of years. He might be better suited to being a lower-tier option, which he should figure to be in Dallas. With that said, the Cowboys should still continue to look for more reinforcements at receiver in the draft given the uncertainty surrounding Hurns and Bryant.
