While it’s still not official, New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is widely-tipped to fill the Indianapolis Colts’ vacant head-coaching job.

But when McDaniels does officially get the job, whether in Indianapolis or elsewhere, he’ll bring Dallas Cowboys linebackers coach and passing game coordinator Matt Eberflus along with him to be his defensive coordinator, according to Brandon George of the Dallas Daily News.

Eberflus, 47, has spent the last seven seasons with the Cowboys after previously spending two seasons as linebackers coach of the Cleveland Browns. He is reportedly a highly-respected coach around the league and was also given the title of passing game coordinator on top of his role as Cowboys linebackers coach in 2016.

Eberflus has no prior experience as an NFL defensive coordinator, but he did spend eight seasons as defensive coordinator for the University of Missouri (2001-08).

Eberflus was out of contract with the Cowboys at the end of the 2017 season. He was a top candidate to replace current Cowboys defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli once he retired. However, Marinelli has already said he still intends to coach again in the 2018 season.

In his seven seasons in Dallas, Eberflus did great work in developing a number of Cowboys linebackers, with Sean Lee, DeMarcus Ware, Anthony Spencer, Anthony Hitchens, and Rolando McClain the more notable names he's helped improve.

If Eberflus does end up in Indianapolis, he will have a lot of work to do in terms of turning around a Colts defense which has been among the worst in the league over the last few years. The Colts have finished 26th or worse in total defense in each of the past three years and 22nd or worse in scoring defense.
