The Dallas Cowboys are poised to be without one of their key offensive weapons for the early portion of 2022.

Cowboys vice president Steven Jones said on Tuesday that wide receiver Michael Gallup could miss “two or three games” at the beginning of next season while recovering from a torn ACL.

That intel echoes what team owner Jerry Jones had to say about Gallup's prospective status for the season opener 24 hours earlier.

“Optimistically, I expect him to give us a question mark around the first game,” he said, per Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News. “And I see a conversation that says conservatively, you would like to have a couple more games to get him out there.”

Gallup tore the ACL in his left knee while catching a touchdown pass against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 17. He underwent correct surgery on February 10th, before which team officials expressed optimism he'd be ready to play come kickoff of 2022.

Despite his injury, Gallup signed a five-year contract with the Cowboys earlier this month that could reach up to $62.5 million with incentives. He finished with 35 catches for 445 yards and two touchdowns last season while being limited to just nine games after going on injured reserve following a calf injury suffered in Week 1.

Dallas will expect more from Gallup next season in wake of trading veteran stalwart Amari Cooper to the Cleveland Browns. The 26-year-old flashed legitimate star power in 2019, with 66 catches, 1,107 receiving yards and six scores while starting just 12 games for the Cowboys.

Once Gallup is healthy enough to play, expect him to start opposite 2020 first-round pick CeeDee Lamb as franchise quarterback Dak Prescott's main targets on the outside.
