After suffering a shoulder injury towards the end of last week, the Dallas Cowboys have officially played rookie wide receiver Cedrick Wilson on injured reserve.

Wilson was a sixth-round pick out of Boise State and a best case scenario this year was probably to be on the Cowboys practice squad. The Cowboys had eight wide receivers on the roster and unofficially was perhaps seventh on the depth chart. This might be enough to keep Wilson on the team until next year where he could compete for a spot again next year. Since Jason Garrett has been the head coach, the Cowboys have never taken more than six wide receivers onto a week one active roster.

An injury is never a good thing for a player, but this actually could be the best case scenario for both sides. Although Wilson can't practice on the IR, he can still be around the team and in meetings and still learn a lot about being an NFL wide receiver. The Cowboys also don't have to worry about trying to pass him through to the practice squad if they decide that he isn't in their numbers this year. He can build up his body for one more year and next year he should have a real chance to make the roster.

Wilson has been praised all spring and summer for a great route runner, and he can run multiple route trees. He is someone the Cowboys feel like is in their future plans although this year's plans are cut short.
