The NFL's loudest franchise is quiet. The Dallas Cowboys, in a moment where one would expect them to dominate the headlines, are mum. After failing to make the postseason, Jerry Jones and Co. have failed to announce what many are wanting to hear: the departure of head coach Jason Garrett.

According to Matt Miller of Bleacher Report, there is a wild rumor brewing from an anonymous AFC executive.

“What if the Cowboys are keeping Garrett on the hook while reaching out to Lincoln Riley? If Lincoln says no, Garrett comes back,” said the AFC executive.

Miller's Tweet seems to be more rumor and speculation than reporting. However, there is some substance to it.

The Cowboys are rumored to want the University of Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley. That should come as no surprise. In three seasons in Norman, the brilliant youthful offensive mind has gone to three-straight College Football Playoffs and produced back-to-back Heisman Trophy-winning turned No. 1 pick quarterbacks.

Riley, 36, is a Texas native. To many, he'd be a home-run hire if the Cowboys could lure him from his cushy job as the Sooners' head coach.

However, if they don't get him, according to the “wild rumor,” they may not go for a home-run hire. Instead, they would stay with the same old, extending Garrett, who is a free agent coach, to continue their seemingly annual tradition of mediocrity under him.

Would this happen? Probably not. But, with the Cowboys playing an odd waiting game at the moment, it's hard not to discount the improbable happening.
