The Chicago Cubs placed veteran infielder Jonathan Villar on the 10-day IL Monday after he suffered an incredibly bizarre injury during a workout. According to Meghan Montemurro, Villar sustained a mouth injury while using an exercise band, which snapped back into his mouth. Villar requires “significant dental work” according to Montemurro, prompting the Cubs to place him on the shelf for a (hopefully) short IL stint.

Well, that's certainly something the Cubs couldn't have planned for. Of all the bizarre injuries athletes have sustained, this has to be up there among the strangest. Villar sounds set for an extensive trip to the dentist following his exercise band mishap, and we're just hoping he's okay and has a speedy recovery. While workout injuries are common for professional athletes, they usually revolve around tweaking a muscle, rather than a piece of equipment causing an oral injury.

Baseball players have suffered some truly strange injuries in the past. Former Cubs slugger Sammy Sosa once threw out his back while sneezing. Blake Snell suffered a freak toe injury in a bathroom-tile-related accident a few years back, and the infamous Trevor Bauer was injured by his own drone. Hell, former Tigers closer Joel Zumaya sustained an injury that stemmed from playing Guitar Hero.

We've truly seen it all when it comes to strange injuries, and now Villar's exercise accident can be added to the list. Hopefully, the veteran only needs a short stint on the IL and didn't do any permanent damage to his mouth in the freak accident.
