San Antonio Spurs three-and-D specialist Danny Green was the recipient of a surprise phone call from his head coach, Gregg Popovich, shortly after he was announced as a member of the NBA's All-Defensive Second Team.

“He said ‘congratulations,' I'm like ‘what for?', he said ‘you made the NBA All-Defensive team,'” Green said. “I said ‘oh, okay' — it was shocking, but he had to eat it up, he said ‘I don't know what I've been watching because I'm always on your tail about playing defense, but apparently you're playing pretty good defense, someone thinks you're a good defender.'”

“He said ‘enjoy it, eat it up, have fun with it and I'm proud of you and the organization is proud' — so it was good to get that call from him, good to get that recognition.”

Green has proven to be one of the best defenders at his position over the years, and despite the modest 1.0 steals, and 0.8 blocks per game during his most recent campaign — the Spurs defensive numbers from the perimeter and their 61-21 win-loss record speak volumes of his effort.

Popovich was sure to give his starter the credit he deserved, despite his constant emphasis on defense during the regular season.
