Even though he’s already 36 years old, Cameron Wake could yet be a part of the Miami Dolphins for a couple more years. That’s at least what the Dolphins are trying to determine. The team has apparently had internal discussions about extending the veteran defensive end’s deal through the 2019 season, per Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald.

Wake has been among the most reliable edge pass rushers in the game since belatedly breaking onto the scene in Miami as a 27-year-old rookie in 2009. He’s recorded at least 7.0 sacks in eight consecutive seasons. He could’ve had even more during that 2015 year; he had seven sacks through seven games before missing the rest of the season due to a torn Achilles.

That Achilles injury hasn’t slowed him down much, though, as he’s come back to post back-to-back double-digit sack seasons. He had 10.5 sacks in 2017 as he played and started in every game for the Fins.

Wake is set to make $8 million in 2018, which will be the final year of the two-year contract he signed in 2017. It makes sense for the Dolphins to lock him up as soon as possible, especially as he continues to play on the impressively high level he’s been at for the last couple of years.

Wake should remain a key part of a new-look Dolphins defense which lost a huge piece in Ndamukong Suh this offseason. However, they did add a couple of capable veterans in Andre Branch and Robert Quinn, who will give Miami another strong pass rusher off the edge opposite Wake.
