Mike Gesicki is now the second tight end this offseason to get franchise tagged, as the Miami Dolphins have decided to keep one of Tua Tagovailoa's favorite targets for at least one more season, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Prior to that, the Cleveland Browns have franchised tagged tight end David Njoku.

Gesicki impressed in his fourth season with the Dolphins, posting career highs of 780 receiving yards, 73 receptions, and 112 targets in the 2021 NFL season. While he only had two receiving touchdowns during that campaign, Gesicki proved to be a reliable receiver in Miami's passing attack. In fact, he got 15 looks in the red zone in 2021 — the second-most on the team and just behind Jaylen Waddle. He converted those targets into nine receptions and two scores.

The 26-year-old tight end out of Penn State still has a lot of room for improvement, and the Dolphins surely trust him to grow in 2022 with Tagovailoa under center for Miami.

In 2021, the Dolphins nearly made the playoffs despite an offense that ranked just 22nd overall with 20.1 points per game and a middle-of-the-road passing game that produced just 214.8 yards per contest. But with Waddle and Gesicki plus the arrival of Mike McDaniels as the team's new head coach, the Dolphins are hoping that their offense will take a big leap forward this year.
