Now that former Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick is reportedly planning to return in the 2021 season, the question is which team will sign him and give him an opportunity to play.

Even if Fitzpatrick will likely have a solid market in free agency, the Dolphins shouldn't be ruled out. Dolphins head coach Brian Flores said the team is welcome to have the 38-year-old back for another season, according to ProFootballTalk's Michael David Smith.

After losing his starting job to rookie quarterback Tua Tagovailoa in the middle of the 2020 season, it feels unlikely for Fitzpatrick to return to Miami, especially if he can play as a starter for another team. But if the journeyman quarterback can’t find a team willing to start him under center, then he could return to the Dolphins for a third straight season.

However, returning to Miami would mean accepting a role as a backup to Tagovailoa. In 2020, the Dolphins had a 4-3 record with Fitzpatrick as their starter when he was replaced by the former Alabama signal-caller. Tagovailoa then led Miami to a 6-3 record as a starter, though he was benched for Fitzpatrick in a few games, with the Dolphins narrowly missing out on a playoff spot in the AFC. Should the Harvard product return as a backup and Tua struggles, then the veteran could see some time back on the field.

Fitzmagic finished the season by completing 68.5% of his passes for 2,091 passing yards and 13 touchdowns with eight interceptions in nine games and seven starts. A lot of things would have to happen for the veteran to return to the Dolphins, but it’s a possibility that is not out of the question.
