The Philadelphia Eagles are just a few months removed from winning Super Bowl LII over the New England Patriots that has brought some special honors for the franchise. Among those has been typically seeing the Super Bowl-winning team being invited to visit the White House.

It doesn't appear that will be the case this time around with president Donald Trump voicing in a public statement that he is electing to cancel this year's trip to the White House for the Eagles. (h/t Mike Garafolo of The NFL Network)

In the last several weeks, there had been much uncertainty about whether the Eagles would attend the event given that many of the players have been outspoken about their political stances. Much of that has been in direct conflict with the point of view that Trump has had on these issues.

The decision for Trump to attempt to get out in front of this situation was likely made to save some face about it all. He was looking to be the one to pull the plug on the scheduled visit to give off the impression that it was the White House that choice to move on from it and not the other way around.

The Eagles aren't the only champion to skip out on the event with the Golden State Warriors electing to go that same path last year, which led to some back-and-forth action between with the team and Trump over the issue. There has been some pushback toward the president since he took office.

It is a decision that will lead to the Eagles more than likely issuing a statement in response to the White House press release that is an attempt to place the blame on the franchise for the event not taking place this summer.
