New Philadelphia Eagles running back Jordan Howard is not known for his ability to catch passes out of the backfield, but he feels that he has improved in that area and hopes to bring that type of versatility to the Eagles next season.

“My first two years I struggled to catch the ball. I admit that,” Howard said at his introductory press conference this week, according to Jeff Kerr of 247 Sports. “But last year I worked on it a lot. I didn’t drop any passes. I wasn’t really featured. I don’t really know why.”

Oddly enough, Howard logged the least receptions of his career in 2018, catching just 20 passes for 145 yards during his final season with the Chicago Bears.

The 24-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of Indiana, was originally selected by the Bears in the fifth round (150th pick overall) of the 2016 NFL Draft.

He had a terrific rookie campaign, racking up 1,313 yards and six touchdowns while averaging 5.2 yards per carry. In addition, he hauled in 29 receptions for 298 yards and a score.

Since then, however, Howard has actually been on a steady decline.

During his second season, he finished with 1,122 yards and nine scores, registering 4.1 yards per attempt. He was also much less of a receiving threat, snaring 23 balls for 125 yards.

Then, this past year, Howard totaled 935 yards while reaching the end zone nine times on the ground, but he recorded a meager 3.7 yards per carry.

Still, given that the Eagles finished 26th in the league in rushing offense this past season, Howard should be a welcome addition.
