Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz is expected to sign a new blockbuster contract extension this summer.

A league source told CBS Sports' Cody Benjamin the Eagles could dangle an extension worth $30 million annually to Wentz this summer.

A league source with a history of negotiations with the Eagles echoed the sentiment to CBSSports.com this week, predicting an extension will probably be finalized ‘this summer.'

The source also estimated terms of a potential contract, projecting an annual salary of around $30 million.

‘Wentz will be north of Kirk Cousins but south of Russell Wilson on an average-per-year basis,' the source said.

The league source also told Benjamin that Wentz will “build club protections in for sure and include work stoppage protections for a team.”

Not only that, but a likely incentive would have Wentz earn a higher salary for each game he played, per CBS Sports.

Wilson is now the highest-paid NFL player with an annual salary of $35 million. Once Wentz's new deal kicks in, he will become the third-highest paid quarterback in the league behind Wilson and the Green Bay Packers' Aaron Rodgers ($33.5 million).

Wentz's $30 million annual pay will tie him with the Atlanta Falcons' Matt Ryan for third place among NFL quarterback salaries.

The Eagles exercised Wentz's fifth-year option on April 29. According to NBC Sports Philadelphia's Dave Zangaro, Wentz will earn $22,783,000 in the 2020 NFL season on the said fifth-year option.

Wentz has certainly come a long way since Philly made him the second overall pick of the 2016 NFL Draft. He's the face of the franchise, for sure.

It's only a matter of time before he gets mentioned in the same breath as Donovan McNabb, Ron Jaworski, and Randall Cunningham.
