In what could be an attempt to save its season, the Atlanta Falcons have worked out cornerback Byron Maxwell. For those unaware, the veteran defensive back was last with the Miami Dolphins, before being cut by the team a few weeks ago.

For context and proper attribution: Field Yates of ESPN reports that Byron Maxwell worked out for the Falcons in his first visit with a team since leaving Miami.

To clarify what might seem confusing, just because the corner worked out for Atlanta, it doesn't inherently mean he will be signed to the team. At the same time, just the idea that the Falcons are working out a corner at this point in the season does mean — at least likely — that they are trying like heck to improve in the secondary. Moreover, attempting to do so in a way that becomes an instant upgrade.

Desmond Trufant, Robert Alford and Brian Poole have been the top three corners for the Falcons this season. Not exactly household names or dominant players at the position.

For what it is worth, there is a connection point that makes some sense for the Falcons to be interested in Maxwell.

Maxwell was in Seattle from 2011-14 and current Atlanta head coach Dan Quinn was the Seahawks’ defensive coordinator for his final two seasons. Defensive coordinator Marquand Manuel was also on the Seattle staff while Maxwell was on the team. There's obviously some familiarity between all the key components.

If he is to be signed, expect it to happen sooner rather than later.
