The Calgary Flames and Dallas Stars played one of the most compelling first-round series in the NHL playoffs. It required all seven games, and even that was not enough. The game went to overtime at tied 2-2. The only thing better than Game 7 in sports is overtime in Game 7.

That once again proved to be the case Sunday. Flames superstar Johnny Gaudreau scored an unreal goal with just under five minutes remaining in the first overtime to send Calgary into the second round.

Gaudreau corralled a rebound near the wall and fired up and over Stars goalie Jake Oettinger into the net from a near impossible angle.

The game certainly did not start well for the Flames. Dallas Stars forward Jamie Benn scored just 40 seconds into the game. The Flames came back and tied it up, only to see Dallas take the lead again. Then midway through the second period, Gaudreau found Matthew Tkachuk for the tying goal.

No one else would score for more than 40 minutes of game action until the Flames’ best player ended the series. It was his second goal of the series, to go along with six assists.

With the win, the Flames move on to face the Edmonton Oilers in the second round. The Oilers won a Game 7 themselves against the Los Angeles Kings Saturday night.

Both Edmonton and Calgary are looking to snap the 29-year drought for Canada. The last Canadian team to win the Stanley Cup was the Montreal Canadiens (who else) way back in 1993.
