Well, that was fast. After getting named as the Florida Gators’ starting quarterback earlier this week, Luke Del Rio picked up a season-ending collarbone injury on Saturday. This isn't great for Jim McElwain and company. Especially not after literally just making the change at the position.

Luke Del Rio hurt his shoulder while getting off a pass late in the second quarter of Saturday’s 38-24 win over the Vanderbilt Commodores. In that particular play, Del Rio was trucked by a Commodore defender after connecting with senior wide receiver Brandon Powell for an 11-yard pass completion.

The quarterback subsequently took to the locker room and did not return to the game. Before leaving the contest, Del Rio went 10-of-14 for 185 yards with no touchdowns and interceptions.

Per Edgar Thompson of the Orlando Sentinel, Del Rio is set to have surgery on Monday according to Florida head coach Jim McElwain.

It was an unfortunate turn of events for Del Rio, who, prior the Vanderbilt game, last saw action on October 29, when he suffered a left shoulder injury versus the Georgia Bulldogs.

With Del Rio gone for the foreseeable future, the Gators will most likely turn to Feleipe Franks again to handle the rock under center. Franks began the season as the Gators’ starter and currently has 557 passing yards and three touchdowns.

Franks and the Gators will look to extend their win streak to four games next week in Gainesville against the visiting LSU Tigers. Jim McElwain will look to steady his QB position best he can moving forward.
