On May 7, the Philadelphia Flyers signed Russian goaltender Ivan Fedotov to a one-year, entry-level contract. According to Philly Voice, the 25-year-old was arrested in Saint Petersburg, Russia on Friday for allegedly avoiding military service.

Friday night, an ambulance transported Fedotov from the St. Petersburgh military commissariat to a hospital. According to Radio Free Europe, Russian authorities have not made any official statements on these reports, and there is no information regarding Fedotov's health.

The Flyers signed Fedotov to the one-year deal with a $925 thousand cap hit, after originally selecting him in the seventh round of the 2015 NHL Draft.

Since the draft, Fedotov has been highly regarded as one of the top goaltenders in Russia. He was Russia's starting goalie in the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and won a silver medal with the national team.

Fedotov also played for multiple teams in the Kontinental Hockey League. He was traded from Traktor to CSKA Moscow in May of 2021. With CSKA, he helped the team win its second Gagarin Cup in franchise history.

Fedotov was a finalist for the KHL top goaltender of the year due to his stellar performance in 2021. He recorded 16 wins out of 22 postseason games with CSKA.

The Flyers organization released a statement on the situation after news broke Friday afternoon.

“We’re aware of the reports, and we are investigating the situation,” Flyers general manager Chuck Fletcher said. “We have no further comment at this time” (per Philly Voice).

The franchise is working to rebuild itself after a brutal 2021-2022 season with the help of new head coach John Tortorella.
