The Philadelphia Flyers had a rough 2021-2022 season, to say the least. When the most entertaining part of a team's season is its mascot, you know there's a problem within the organization.

The Flyers went 25-46-11, lost their captain, fired their head coach, and fired their interim head coach all in one season. However, the franchise seems to be turning things around this offseason, starting with the coaching staff. John Tortorella is set to be the next head coach of the Flyers and had a meeting with the team's general manager on Thursday.

NBC Sports Philadelphia's John Clark tweeted the news.

The Flyers ultimately narrowed their options down to either Tortorella or Barry Trotz before coming to this final decision. Tortorella succeeds head coach Alain Vigneault and interim head coach Mike Yeo.

While Tortorella has a solid NHL coaching resume, including a Stanley Cup championship, he definitely wasn't Philadelphia fans' first choice for the position.

The city's beef with Tortorella began when he became the head coach of the New York Rangers in 2009. During the start of his career with the Rangers, Tortorella surpassed Flyers head coach Peter Laviolette as the winningest-American-born coach. The two teams then battled it out in a dramatic shootout for the final spot in the 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs, Philadelphia coming out victorious.

The Flyers are expected to make the official hiring announcement on Friday.
