Philadelphia Flyers goalie Ivan Fedotov was arrested in Saint Petersburg, Russia last Friday for allegedly avoiding military service. Shortly after his arrest, Fedotov was hospitalized for stress-induced gastritis (per the Moscow Times).
According to PhillyHockeyNow, Fedotov is now in the Arctic as a member of the Russian Navy. The news outlet reports that he was sent to Severomorsk in the Arctic Circle, which is the administrative base for the Northern Fleet of the Russian Navy.
Fedotov has spent multiple seasons in the Kontinental Hockey League. In May of 2021, he was traded from Traktor to CSKA Moscow.
The Finland native helped the team win its second Gagarin Cup in franchise history. According to PhillyHockeyNow, CSKA players are “considered military personnel, subject to enlistment between the ages of 18 and 27.” Fedotov turns 26 in November.
Less than two months ago, the Russian goaltender signed a one-year, entry-level deal with the Flyers. The deal, with a $925 thousand cap hit, comes after the team originally selected him in the seventh round of the 2015 NHL Draft.
Despite being drafted by the Flyers seven years ago, Fedotov has yet to play in the NHL. However, he's had a highly successful career in Russia. He's widely known as one of the country's top goaltenders. In fact, Fedotov won a silver medal as Russia's starting goalie in the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.
