Frankie Edgar has reached the point in his career where he's going to be asked often about retirement. The former UFC champion has reached the age of 40 and is right in a prime ‘ask about retirement' spot heading into his UFC 268 bout against Marlon Vera.

Frankie Edgar is used to being asked about the future. He spent his whole career being asked about dropping weight classes. He started at lightweight and today he finds himself at bantamweight.

He doesn't plan on retiring though. He plans to keep going no matter what.

“I’m gonna be fighting on my death bed,” Frankie Edgar told reporters during a recent pre-fight media scrum for UFC 268 (transcription via Bloody Elbow).

“When I say I’mma fight on my death bed, it’s (me saying) I’m a fighter. That’s what I am. I’m always gonna fight in some way, shape or form.

Frankie Edgar knows he's reached a point where he's going to be asked about retirement. It doesn't interest him though.

“It’s natural to be a 40-year-old guy and people say, ‘Hey, when are you gonna hang it up?’ Or, it’s natural for your opponent to say they’re gonna retire you. Come on. It’s fucking old stuff.”

As long as fighting remains fun, he plans on competing. His fight against Marlon Vera at UFC 268 is fun but not as much as becoming a champion.

“I think all fights are fun, but achieving the gold is always the goal. That’s probably the most fun, so if I could… I think you need to have that pinnacle at the top of your list. That’s kind of what I’ve gotten into this sport for, it’s to be the best. It’s always been my mindset.

“I’m enjoying the process as I go.”

Frankie Edgar will be focused on his upcoming bout at UFC 268 against Marlon Vera.
